Scouts

10.5 – 14 year olds, girls and boys

Scouts meet on Tuesdays 7pm to 9pm during school term time.   Most meetings are at the Scout Hall, but once or twice a term the activity is away from the hall, visiting interesting places

Contact one of our Scout leaders for more information.

Action-packed activities form the core of being a Scout, encouraging young people to make their own decisions and to explore the world around them.

Check our awesome programme of activities!

The Scouts programme is designed to appeal to and challenge boys and girls who are in Year 6 to Year 10 at School.  Most scouts are at least 10 ½ when they join, and move on to Venturers by their 15th birthday.

Our Scout Troop is made up of about 40% girls and 60% boys;  and we have male and female Scout leaders.

Scouts are generally organised into Teams of six, with older Scouts as Team Leader and Assistant Team Leaders. The Team Leaders encourage the Scouts to achieve badges and awards and plan activities for their patrol.

We are transitioning to the New Youth Program so the below information is the older award scheme.  Lots of exciting updates to happen in Scouting!!

What we get up to

Scouts commit to doing their best in everything they do, and to helping others, at the same time as learning valuable problem-solving and teambuilding skills.

Our young people progress through a variety of learning challenges, and work towards achieving interest badges and their Chief Scout Award, moving towards the highest level of achievement for our young people – the Queen’s Scout Award. Many Scouts awards are cross-creditable to the Young New Zealanders’ Challenge – formerly known as the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.  Scouts are encouraged to sign up for weekend camps to learn about basic outdoor skills, and leadership;  and for the week long national scout schools, covering snow sports, aviation, photography, canoeing, and more.

Brooklyn Scouts also take part in a wide range of outdoor activities:  examples include a ski trip to Mt Ruapehu, tramping trips in the Ruahines and Ureweras,   sailing at the Sea Scouts facility at Evans Bay, and a cycling trip over the Rimutaka Incline.   Camps are held at Brookfield, the Scout outdoor facility at Wainuiomata, and other places around the greater Wellington area.   All are aimed at enabling our scouts to have fun, and learn leadership and outdoor skills.

Scouts are creative performers as well.  A highlight for 2014 will be the Lower Hutt/ Wellington combined Scout and Guide “gang show” – a great opportunity for scouts with interests in drama, singing, music, or theatre backstage to join the crew for the September production.
