Tent issues….. from 1916!

Evening Post, Volume XCII, Issue 141, 12 December 1916, Page 9

With our new quartermaster on board and starting to introduce new processes around our managing our tents, camp and expedition gear, it’s good to know that some things never change.

Here is an article from the 12 December 1916 issue of the Evening Post:

BROOKLYN SCOUTS
On Wednesday, 27th December, the Brooklyn Troop will cdmmence a ten days’ camp at Lowry Bay. Although Brook-, lyn is not a very large troop the ladsare keen and are well on their way to becoming efficient scouts. There is a difficulty about tents, and it has- been suggested that some Brooklyn residents might be” willing to lend them to the Scouts for the camp. The Scoutmaster will be at the Clubroom, Brooklyn, between 7.45 and 8.30 on Friday night.

Bear Grylls’ essential kit: World Scout Badge

Bear Grylls about to jump out of a plane, wearing World Scout Badge

In case you didn’t know, adventurer Bear Grylls is Chief Scout.  (You can hear him interviewed in this earlier post.)

So what essential kit does Bear take with him when filming Man vs Wild, along with his knife, and water bottle?  That’s right – a Scout Badge.  And all the knowledge and spirit that comes with it.

Bear Grylls wearing World Scout Badge in Man vs Wild

I grabbed a couple of rough screen shots whilst watching his latest adventure in the South Island – one of him about to jump out of an RNZAF plane; another climbing out of a gully.

Fantastic inspiration to all current, former and potential keas, cubs, scouts, venturers and rovers.

Don’t know about the weta eating though… *ugh*

New poster: Homework for real life…

The sharp-eyed amongst you may have noticed our new poster out in the wild in Brooklyn and surroundings areas.  It features our Cubs, Scouts and parents, along with Chief Scout and adventurer, Bear Grylls.

We could always do with greater coverage and it’d be great to get your help.  Maybe you could print one-off and put it up at work? Or get one in your classroom / school notice board?

We have a few print outs left, so leave a comment below or get in touch with a committee member if you’d like one.

HRH Duchess of Cambridge

Don’t expect to see her helping with the Brooklyn Cubs and Keas anytime soon, but Kate Middleton – or HRH the Duchess of Cambridge – has become Scouting’s newest volunteer and will help at local cub packs and beaver colonies (equivalent to Keas).

The Duchess, who joins 66,000 girls and 40,000 female leaders in Scouting, will help out at groups close to where she lives.

In Brooklyn, we are warmly welcoming adult volunteers who want to get involved – be it for one night a term, or more regularly.  It all helps. To be a part of Brooklyn Scouts contact one of our great leaders.

Here’s Chief Scout Bear Grylls talking about the value of all volunteers for making scouting a quality, vital experience for young people today.
